Role Overview

As a Community Development Worker, your primary responsibility will be to liaise, coordinate, and mobilize community members in the Western Cape. You will assist in informing the public about available government services and help them communicate their needs to the appropriate authorities at national, provincial, and local government levels. By working closely with the community, you will help bring government closer to the people of the Western Cape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide information and assist communities with access to government services.
  • Identify the needs of local communities and communicate these needs to relevant governmental structures.
  • Promote the activities of existing local community workers and support efforts to improve service delivery.
  • Compile reports and documents detailing progress, issues, actions taken, and outcomes as required by the department.
  • Stay up to date with government services, processes, and mechanisms to ensure effective communication and assistance.

Minimum Requirements

To apply for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 6 months of relevant experience in community development or a similar field.

Desirable Qualifications

  • A Community Development Learnership Certificate is advantageous.
  • A valid Code B (or higher) driver’s license is recommended, although individuals with disabilities who are unable to drive but have reasonable access to transport are also encouraged to apply.

Key Skills and Competencies

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of public service policies, legislation, guidelines, and best practices.
  • An understanding of the composition and functioning of communities in the Western Cape.
  • Strong facilitation skills to encourage public participation in policy-making and service delivery.
  • Proficiency in project organization, interpersonal skills, and report writing.
  • Proven computer literacy (MS Office).
  • Self-management and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Information

  • Candidates should ideally reside in the Laingsburg municipal area.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be required to provide documentation for verification purposes and undergo criminal record vetting.
  • Interviews and possibly competency assessments or proficiency tests will form part of the selection process.
  • The selection will be based on the Employment Equity (EE) targets set by the department.
