eThekwini Municipality is inviting applications for the position of Epidemiologist within the Clinical Support Services Department. This permanent, full-time role is based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, with a closing date for applications on February 21, 2025.
Job Purpose: The Epidemiologist will play a vital role in providing comprehensive epidemiological and health indicator services to the Health Unit. This position involves the assessment and analysis of health status, risk factors, and preventive measures in the eThekwini Municipality area, supporting the department’s strategic planning and decision-making processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development of strategic plans by providing epidemiological assessments of health status, risk factors, and prevention strategies in the municipality.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including healthcare providers and government agencies, to share and discuss epidemiological data and findings.
- Provide valuable input into budget planning for health-related programs and ensure smooth administration of related functions.
- Maintain accurate records and manage information systems pertaining to health and epidemiological data.
- Prepare detailed reports on disease states, risk factors, and preventative measures to inform public health strategies.
- Supervise the preparation of quarterly and annual reports related to epidemiology and health indicators.
- Implement financial control measures where applicable to ensure efficient resource management.
- Lead and manage all aspects of disease surveillance within the municipality.
- Oversee and organize research activities related to epidemiology in the department.
- Manage the epidemiological information system, ensuring it operates effectively and accurately.
- Carry out other related duties as needed to support the department’s goals.

Essential Requirements: The ideal candidate must meet the following qualifications and experience:
- A Master’s Degree (NQF Level 9) in Epidemiology, Field Epidemiology, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, or a related field.
- A valid motor vehicle driving license.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in epidemiology or a related public health field.
Preferred Requirements:
- 6 years of relevant experience in epidemiology or public health research.
