This permanent position within District 7 is crucial for overseeing municipal cemetery services and ensuring the effective maintenance and development of cemetery facilities in the area.
Role Overview
As the Supervisor (Cemetery), you will play a pivotal role in managing the daily operations of cemetery services within the eThekwini Municipality. Your responsibilities will include supervising staff and resources, ensuring the smooth operation of cemetery maintenance, and ensuring that all necessary services are carried out effectively. The role requires a strong leader who can oversee various functions while maintaining safety standards and adhering to municipal regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Staff and Resource Management: You will ensure that all required resources, including vehicles, small plant equipment, materials, and fuel, are available for staff to complete their tasks efficiently. Additionally, you will oversee the development and maintenance of cemetery facilities.
- Facility Maintenance: Supervising the repair and upkeep of cemetery grounds will be a core responsibility, ensuring facilities remain in optimal condition for the community.
- Community Engagement: You will be the point of contact between cemetery staff, the public, and other stakeholders, ensuring clear and sensitive communication in line with the Batho Pele principles.
- Health and Safety: Ensuring the safety and well-being of staff and the public in the cemetery area will be a key aspect of the role. You’ll ensure that all work is conducted in a safe environment, both in terms of physical tasks and potential hazardous situations.
- Ongoing Learning: Keeping updated with the latest developments in cemetery management, you’ll ensure your knowledge is current and applicable to the operational needs of the municipality.

Essential Qualifications
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent qualification.
- Valid Motor Vehicle Driving License.
- A minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a similar role.
- Computer Literacy is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) along with an Administrative Certificate.
- A preferred 4 years’ relevant experience.
Additional Conditions
- The role may involve handling human remains and requires the ability to undertake training as needed.
- Overtime work may be required.
Remuneration and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary, with annual compensation ranging from R245,539.32 to R318,715.68, along with a 13th cheque and various benefits such as housing subsidy, leave, medical aid, and pension fund.
