SAWS is a key public entity under South Africa’s Ministry of Environmental Affairs, operating under the South African Weather Service Act (No. 8 of 2001). As the national authority for weather and climate forecasting, we deliver critical environmental monitoring services across the region.
Position Overview
Employment Type: Full-Time Permanent
Education Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or Environmental Management
Experience Needed: 4+ years in environmental monitoring systems
Location: Gauteng Province
Department: Technical Operations
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and enhance national air quality monitoring infrastructure
- Ensure 24/7 operation of monitoring equipment and data accuracy
- Perform scheduled maintenance and emergency repairs on monitoring systems
- Install and commission new monitoring stations and equipment
- Manage data quality control and reporting processes
- Provide technical support to regional offices and remote stations
- Maintain compliance with ISO 9001/17025 standards
- Manage workshop operations and equipment inventory
- Mentor junior technical staff
- Monitor project budgets and timelines
Minimum Requirements
- Valid Code 8 driver’s license (manual transmission)
- Proven expertise in environmental monitoring technologies
- Strong computer systems and database management skills
- Knowledge of air quality regulations and maintenance protocols
- Ability to work flexible hours and travel nationally
- Project management experience
