Job Opportunity: Environmental Officer (Control Grade A) – MPA Management

Position Details:

  • Job Type: Full-Time
  • Required Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree (NQF 8) in Natural/Environmental Science or related field
  • Experience: 6+ years in environmental management or conservation
  • Location: Cape Town, Western Cape
  • Department: Environmental Conservation & Safety

Key Requirements:

  • Expertise in environmental policy implementation (e.g., Biodiversity Act, Marine Protected Areas regulations)
  • Experience in marine conservation, biodiversity planning, and compliance enforcement
  • Proficiency in project management, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement
  • Knowledge of public sector procedures and international conservation frameworks

Core Responsibilities:

  1. Design and expand Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to protect marine ecosystems.
  2. Develop policies and management plans for MPAs and Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs).
  3. Monitor compliance with national and international conservation targets (e.g., National Biodiversity Strategy).
  4. Facilitate stakeholder collaboration to strengthen public-private partnerships in conservation.
  5. Conduct assessments and reporting using tools like the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT).
