Position Overview: A permanent, full-time role is available for a Leading Fire Safety Inspector within the Fire and Emergency Services branch, located in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The closing date for applications is February 21, 2025. This role is an essential part of the Fire Safety Department, responsible for ensuring that complex buildings, industrial facilities, and other structures comply with fire safety standards and regulations.

Job Purpose: The primary responsibility of the Leading Fire Safety Inspector is to inspect and assess buildings and facilities with complex fire protection measures. This includes high-risk industrial areas, multi-use buildings, and other structures to ensure compliance with fire safety standards and municipal bylaws. The position aims to preserve life, protect property, and safeguard the environment from fire hazards and other dangerous conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular fire safety inspections of high-risk and complex facilities to monitor compliance with relevant fire safety codes and municipal bylaws.
  • Assess the fire safety aspects of building plan submissions to ensure adherence to safety standards.
  • Communicate with the public to raise awareness about fire safety practices.
  • Enforce compliance with national fire safety standards, regulations, and municipal by-laws.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff, fostering a positive and effective fire safety culture within the team.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of inspections and findings.
  • Undertake risk management and governance activities to ensure effective safety practices are in place.

Essential Requirements: To qualify for the position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF Level 4).
  • Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (NQF Level 5).
  • Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification.
  • HAZMAT Awareness & Operations certification.
  • A valid motor vehicle driving license.
  • Peace Officer Certificate.
  • At least four years of relevant experience, including a minimum of two years as a Senior Fire Safety Inspector.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to navigate uneven terrain and maintain agility in various environments.
  • Must meet the medical standards required for appointment.
  • Physically capable of performing the functions of the role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • National Diploma in Fire Technology (NQF Level 6).
  • Five years of relevant experience, with at least three years at the Senior Fire Safety Inspector level.
