eThekwini Municipality is currently seeking a dedicated and motivated individual for the position of Small Plant Operator. Based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, this permanent position is part of the Maintenance Works Central division, within the MV LV Operations department. The successful candidate will work closely with the Depot Supervisor and will play an essential role in the maintenance and repair of electrical infrastructure.
Job Purpose:
The Small Plant Operator will be responsible for performing various tasks related to construction, general maintenance, and repair work to electrical infrastructure. This includes operating small plant and equipment and undertaking general laboring duties. The position also involves maintaining a safe work environment and ensuring the efficient handling of materials and tools.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake general laboring tasks and operate small plant and equipment.
- Clean work sites, store equipment, and tools, and prepare materials for transport.
- Safely load scrap material and equipment for disposal or reclamation at appropriate sites.
- Maintain and care for the depot, equipment, and tools.
- Ensure a safe working environment in all conditions.
Special Conditions:
- The role requires a 40-hour work week, Monday to Saturday.
- Standby duty is required, and overtime may be necessary to meet operational needs.
- Incumbents will be provided with protective clothing, as per the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) schedule.
- The successful candidate must be prepared to work in all weather conditions and may be transferred or relocated to any of the Electricity Unit’s depots or divisions as required.

Essential Requirements:
- An appropriate level of primary education.
- Certification of competency in the operation of small plant and equipment, to be acquired within 6 months from the date of appointment.
- A minimum of 6 months of relevant experience.
Preferred Requirements:
- An appropriate level of secondary education.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience.

Remuneration:
R139,675.56 – R176,171.88 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
