Generic Requirements

  • Must display competency in post-specific functions.
  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Proficient in at least two official languages, including English.
  • Possess a valid light motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • No previous criminal or departmental convictions or pending cases.
  • No visible tattoos when wearing any SAPS uniform.
  • Applicants will undergo a vetting process, including security screening and fingerprint verification.

Additional Post Requirements

  • Relevant valid Trade Test Certificate in automotive mechanics, in accordance with the Skills Development Amendment Act 37/2008.
  • Experience in the automotive field is advantageous.

Core Functions

  • Perform quality and cost-effective repairs and maintenance on SAPS vehicles.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Diagnose issues, strip vehicles, and determine parts needed for services and repairs.
  • Complete parts request lists for required vehicle parts.
  • Document work completed and actual time taken on job cards.
  • Safeguard tools and equipment.
  • Mentor apprentices under supervision.
  • Comply with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (Act 83 of 1995).

General Application Instructions

  • Use only the official application form available on the SAPS website (www.saps.gov.za) and at SAPS Police Stations. The previous Z83 form is no longer accepted.
  • Clearly specify the post particulars and reference number on the application form.
  • Include a comprehensive CV and certified copies of your ID, Senior Certificate, all educational qualifications, service certificates from previous employers, proof of relevant experience, and your motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Original documentation must be produced during the selection process as requested. All qualifications and driver’s licenses will undergo verification with the relevant institutions.
  • Late applications will not be accepted or considered.

Selection Process:

  • Shortlisted candidates will undergo a personal interview and practical assessment.
  • Reference checks will be conducted for all shortlisted candidates.
  • Candidates may be vetted in terms of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act and the Children’s Act. Disqualification may occur if a candidate appears on the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register.
  • Candidates must disclose any interim or final protection orders under the Domestic Violence Act or Protection from Harassment Act, which may lead to disqualification.

Additional Information:

  • Correspondence will be conducted only with successful candidates. If you do not hear from SAPS within 3 months after the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful.
  • Appointed candidates will undergo a medical assessment and a lateral entry program at a SAPS Academy & Training Centre, maintaining competency as required by SAPS.
  • Appointments will be made in accordance with the South African Police Service Act (Act 68 of 1995).
  • SAPS is not obligated to fill the post after advertisement.
