Job Description

The Agricultural Research Council is seeking a Senior Research Technician to assist the breeder with the preparation and management of experimental material and trial fields in sorghum plant breeding. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the preparation of experimental material and managing trial fields.
  • Implementing planned crossings and ensuring accurate research data collection.
  • Providing technical input to support research projects proactively.
  • Delivering reliable data in a timely manner to support project objectives.
  • Applying techniques within established guidelines, standards, and references.
  • Ensuring cost-effective use of research resources, including purchase requisitions and procurement of materials.
  • Fostering technology partnerships and assisting in the hosting of field days.
  • Communicating with farmers and extension officers regarding project progress and outcomes.
  • Participating in innovation and commercialization activities related to research findings.
  • Managing the recruitment and supervision of temporary workers, including timesheet preparation and submission to Human Capital Management (HCM).
  • Contributing to publications and presentations, showcasing the research conducted.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance with health and safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Education:
    • MTech degree in Plant Breeding or a related field (Plant Science, Plant Production/Agronomy, Genetics/Plant Biotechnology) with 2 years of applicable experience.
    • B Degree or B Honours Degree; B.Tech Degree or National Higher Diploma with 6 years of applicable experience.
    • National Diploma (3 years) with 8 years of applicable experience.
  • Skills and Qualifications:
    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
    • Valid EC driver’s license.
    • Experience in conventional plant breeding techniques is an advantage.
    • Ability to set up and manage research trials under greenhouse and field conditions is preferred.
    • Understanding of weed control, soil cultivation methods, fertilization, and sustainable field management is beneficial.
    • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
    • Knowledge of molecular biology tools is advantageous.
    • Registration with a relevant scientific body is a plus.

This position offers a competitive remuneration package aligned with the role’s scope and responsibilities. The appointment is subject to a positive security clearance, and preference will be given to designated groups in accordance with the ARC Employment Equity Plan. Permanent appointments are subject to a six-month probation period.
