Ethekwini Municipality is currently seeking a qualified Senior Fire Safety Inspector to join their Fire and Emergency Services branch in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. This is a permanent role with a closing date for applications on February 21, 2025. The position is crucial in ensuring the safety and protection of the public, property, and the environment from fire hazards, through diligent inspections and adherence to fire safety standards and regulations.
Job Purpose: As a Senior Fire Safety Inspector, the successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting moderate-risk buildings, multi-use facilities, and other structures that feature both active and passive fire protection systems. The role is focused on ensuring compliance with fire safety standards and municipal bylaws, working to preserve life and prevent the destruction of property or the environment from fire-related incidents.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine fire safety inspections to monitor compliance with relevant fire safety codes, standards, and municipal bylaws.
- Address fire safety complaints and departmental service requests in a timely manner.
- Communicate effectively with the public, promoting awareness of fire safety practices.
- Enforce fire safety bylaws and national fire safety standards/regulations.
- Maintain detailed records and documentation of inspections, findings, and related administrative duties.
- Participate in governance and risk management activities to ensure adherence to safety protocols and standards.

Essential Requirements: To be considered for the Senior Fire Safety Inspector role, candidates must meet the following essential criteria:
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent qualification.
- Fire Fighter 1 & 2 certification.
- HAZMAT Awareness & Operations certification.
- A valid motor vehicle driving license.
- Peace Officer Certificate.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in fire safety inspections or related roles.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to navigate uneven terrain and maintain agility while working in various environments.
- Must meet the required medical standards for appointment.
- Physical capability to perform all the duties associated with the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (NQF Level 5).
- 4 years of relevant experience in fire safety or related fields.
