The Department of Local Government within the Western Cape Government is offering a permanent role for a Community Development Worker in Macassar. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about assisting communities in the Western Cape by identifying their needs and ensuring that these are communicated effectively to the appropriate government levels. The role also involves promoting and coordinating local initiatives to bring government services closer to the people.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Community Development Worker is to engage with communities to inform them of the services available through local, provincial, and national government structures. Other key duties include:

  • Assisting communities in accessing essential services.
  • Identifying the needs of local communities and liaising with relevant authorities to address these needs.
  • Supporting the activities of community workers to improve service delivery.
  • Reporting on progress and challenges, and documenting the actions taken to resolve community issues.
  • Staying up to date with government services and providing guidance on how to access them.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must possess at least a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or an equivalent qualification. In addition, candidates must have a minimum of 6 months of relevant work experience in community development or a related field.

Recommended Qualifications

A Community Development Learnership Certificate is highly recommended, along with a valid (Code B or higher) driver’s license. Candidates with disabilities who have restricted driving abilities, but reasonable access to transportation, are also encouraged to apply.

Desired Skills and Competencies

Applicants should have:

  • A solid understanding of the policies, procedures, and legislation that govern public services.
  • The ability to facilitate public participation in service delivery and policy development.
  • Strong skills in project organization, report writing, and interpersonal communication.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and the ability to manage tasks and timelines effectively.

Remuneration

The successful candidate will receive an annual salary of R255,450, in line with Salary Level 6. Additional service benefits, including medical assistance, housing assistance, and pension contributions, are available to qualifying employees according to the applicable regulations.

Additional Information

Applicants are preferred to reside within the municipality of Macassar. Those shortlisted will need to submit documentation for verification and undergo a criminal record check. Candidates will also participate in interviews and competency assessments as part of the selection process, which will be guided by the department’s Employment Equity (EE) targets.
