Training and Development
Successful candidates will undergo two years of full-time military training, which includes:
- Basic Military Training (BMT) – A fundamental requirement for all recruits.
- Specialist Training – Training tailored to the recruit’s assigned division (Army, Air Force, Navy, or Military Health Service).
- Deployment – Recruits will be placed in a relevant division, unit, or base.
Career Paths in the SANDF
The MSDS program recruits approximately 2,000 volunteers annually into various divisions of the SANDF, including:

- South African Air Force (SAAF)
- South African Navy (SAN)
- South African Military Health Service (SAMHS)
Upon completion of the 24-month training period, a select number of recruits may be offered short-term contracts (typically 10 years) in the full-time force. The remainder will have the opportunity to join the SANDF Reserve Force, where they can utilize their newly acquired military skills.
