About the Role

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a vibrant, diverse institution committed to Africa’s development. In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, UWC runs a seven‑year Scholars Programme that provides financial, social, and academic support to talented undergraduate and postgraduate students who face financial or social barriers, especially women, from South Africa and across the continent.

The Scholar Support Officer reports to the Director of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme and works closely with the Manager of Finance and Operations. The officer will provide day‑to‑day administrative assistance and welfare support to all Mastercard Foundation Scholars throughout their studies at UWC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Arrange accommodation, travel, medical cover, visas and other logistics for scholars before arrival and during their studies.
  • Respond promptly to scholars’ routine administrative enquiries.
  • Plan and organise programme events (e.g., onboarding, graduation) – venue booking, invitations, service providers, programme schedules, etc.
  • Coordinate scholars’ participation in local and international events hosted by the Mastercard Foundation or partner organisations.
  • Manage the annual elections and activities of the Scholars’ Council and act as the liaison between the Council and the Programme Management Office.
  • Build and maintain relationships with UWC faculties and departments to ensure scholars receive continuous support.
  • Collaborate with the Office for Students with Disabilities to provide appropriate accommodations for scholars with disabilities.
  • Assist refugee, asylum‑seeker, and displaced youth scholars in accessing resources for academic and community integration.
  • Promote scholars and their initiatives on digital and media platforms to raise visibility.
  • Compile monthly and quarterly reports on scholar support together with the Programme Director and Finance Manager for the Mastercard Foundation.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of support services, identifying gaps and recommending improvements.
  • Facilitate training, mentoring, and networking opportunities for scholars as needed.
  • Serve as an emergency contact for scholars requiring urgent assistance.

Minimum Requirements

  • National Diploma or Advanced Certificate at NQF Level 6 (or equivalent qualification).
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in higher education, with a proven record of supporting students.
  • Working knowledge of UWC systems (e.g., SASI, MAS).
  • Experience coordinating student support programmes.
  • Computer literacy: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access/Database, Internet, email.

Additional Advantages

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Familiarity with UWC financial administration tools such as Infor LN.
