The Department of Local Government in the Western Cape Government is seeking a qualified and capable individual for the position of Community Development Worker in Khayelitsha. This permanent role offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with communities, helping them access services and communicate their needs to government structures at national, provincial, and local levels.

Job Purpose

The key responsibility of this position is to act as a liaison, coordinator, and mobilizer between the government and the community in Khayelitsha. The selected candidate will assist in identifying community needs, inform residents about government services, and help connect them with the necessary resources. This role is integral in bringing government closer to the people, fostering stronger relationships between citizens and government institutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Community Support: Inform and assist local communities in accessing government services and support.
  • Needs Identification: Assess community needs and communicate them to the relevant government bodies.
  • Promote Local Networks: Work to enhance the activities of local community workers to improve service delivery and promote community engagement.
  • Reporting: Compile regular reports documenting progress, issues, actions taken, and outcomes.
  • Government Services: Stay up to date on the services offered by government agencies and how citizens can access them.

Minimum Requirements

  • Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or an equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of 6 months of relevant experience in community development or a similar field.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Community Development Learnership Certificate.
  • A valid Code B (or higher) driving license. (Note: People with disabilities that restrict driving abilities but have reasonable access to transport are also encouraged to apply.)

Required Competencies

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A solid understanding of public policies, legislation, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of the composition and functioning of communities in the Western Cape.
  • Strong facilitation skills for public participation in policy-making and service delivery.
  • Project organization skills and the ability to work well with others.
  • Report writing and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Self-management and the ability to adhere to deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Remuneration

This position offers an annual salary of R 255,450 (Salary Level 6). Service benefits, such as medical assistance, housing assistance, and pension contributions, are available for qualifying employees in line with collective agreements or applicable prescripts.
